Overview
Babylon’s Fall is an action role-playing hack-and-slash game developed by PlatinumGames and published by Square Enix. Released on March 3, 2022, for PS5, PS4, and Windows, the game places players in the role of Sentinels—warriors bonded with a parasitic device called the Gideon Coffin—as they ascend the massive Tower of Babel on a dangerous mission to reclaim its secrets.
Core Gameplay Features
Cooperative Tower Climb
- Players embark on quests from the central hub (Sentinel Force HQ), ascending floors of the tower while battling enemies and collecting loot.
- Designed for up to four-player online co-op (PlayStation Plus required), though solo play is also possible.
Quad-Wield Combat with Strategic Depth
- Equip two physical weapons and two spectral weapons via the Gideon Coffin system.
- Players can wield up to four weapons simultaneously, balancing power with a regenerating energy meter that adds tactical depth.
Distinct Artistic Style
- Features a unique “brushwork style” visual presentation inspired by classical oil paintings, designed to give the game a painterly, textured appearance.
Platform & Service Details
Online-Only Model

- Following the shutdown, the game became unplayable and was removed from digital storefronts.
Reception Highlights
Critical Response
- The game received mostly negative reviews. While the combat system’s uniqueness was noted, many criticized the repetitive gameplay, bland environments, and lack of polish.
Commercial Outcome
- Babylon’s Fall struggled commercially, with low player counts and limited post-launch engagement.
- It is widely regarded as one of the most notable failures in the live-service genre.
- Some players appreciated the co-op experience and early exploration, but the always-online requirement and shallow content led to widespread disappointment.

Final Thoughts
Babylon’s Fall aimed to combine PlatinumGames’ signature combat with a striking visual style and live-service model. However, its reliance on online connectivity, repetitive gameplay loop, and lack of meaningful content updates led to poor reception and an early shutdown. It stands as a cautionary tale in the live-service gaming space.
